Alleppey vs Kumarakom: Which Backwater Base Is Right for You?
By MyAlleppey Team
Both Alleppey and Kumarakom sit on the shores of Vembanad Lake, and both are superb houseboat bases — but they attract different kinds of travellers.
Alleppey is more accessible, with more houseboats available at a wider range of price points. The canal network is denser here, so you'll weave through villages, under low bridges, and past rice paddies on your first afternoon. It's busier, which some find energetic and others find intrusive.
Kumarakom is quieter and slightly more upscale. The focus here is on the lake itself and the bird sanctuary. You'll see more wildlife and fewer other houseboats. Rates are generally higher.
Our recommendation: If this is your first Kerala backwater trip and you want variety — canals, lake, villages — choose Alleppey. If you've been before or you're on a luxury honeymoon and want tranquility, go for Kumarakom.
Many packages combine both: depart from Alleppey, cruise through the canals, spend the night on Vembanad Lake, and return via Kumarakom.
