What to Expect on an Alleppey Houseboat: A First-Timer's Guide

By MyAlleppey Team

Your first Alleppey houseboat experience starts at the jetty. You'll be greeted by your crew — typically a captain, a cook, and a helper — who will show you to your cabin and offer a welcome coconut water or chai.

Check-in is usually at noon. The houseboat sets off into the canals almost immediately, and within minutes the noise of the town fades away.

The route typically covers the Alleppey canals in the afternoon before opening onto the expanse of Vembanad Lake for sunset. You'll anchor overnight in a quiet stretch of water, often near a village.

Meals are cooked fresh on board by your chef. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are included in most packages — expect rice, fish curry, sambar, and freshly made parottas.

Mornings are magical. Birds call from the palms, fishermen pole their dugouts through the mist, and breakfast is served on the deck before you head back to the jetty by 9am.

Pack light — a change of clothes, sunscreen, insect repellent, and a good book. Your houseboat does the rest.
