The Alleppey–Kumarakom stretch is what most travellers picture when they imagine Kerala's backwaters. It's the photogenic middle section of Vembanad Lake, framed by narrow village canals on either side. Here's what happens, hour by hour.
12:00 — Embark at Alleppey
Pallathuruthy or Finishing Point jetty. Welcome drink, cabin assignment, and the crew loads the day's provisions while you settle in.
13:30 — Lunch as you cruise
The boat eases out of the canal network and onto the southern edge of Vembanad Lake. Kerala lunch served as the boat moves.
16:00 — Pallippuram and Muhamma
Two villages on the western shore where coir-making is still done by hand. The boat slows; you can step off if there's a stop.
17:30 — Anchor for sunset
Mid-lake or near a quiet island. The crew brings tea or sundowners. The light is best between 17:45 and 18:15.
07:00 (next day) — Kumarakom approach
If your itinerary continues to Kumarakom, the boat starts moving again around 6 am to reach the bird sanctuary by sunrise.
