2 hours — ₹2,000
Express Canal Explorer. From the jetty past the Nehru Trophy snake boat track into the narrow canals of Kuppapuram village, returning along palm-lined canals where coir is woven. Good for a short gap in your day.
3 hours — ₹3,000
Canals and Vembanad Lake sunset. Through the Vilakkumaram canals and the deep channels of Kainakary, under the wooden bridges of Kuttamangalam, then out onto Vembanad Lake for the sunset and back past the water lilies. The best slot is 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM. This is the ride most people choose.
4 hours — ₹4,000
Deep Kuttanad and toddy shop. Through Kainakary and Panackal, the inner canals of Kuttamangalam, the C Block paddy fields below sea level and a lagoon of pink water lilies, with a stop at a village toddy shop for Kerala food such as karimeen. Best as a 6:00 AM sunrise ride or an 11:30 AM lunch ride.
Shikara ride cost per person
Because the price is for the whole boat, the cost per person falls as your group grows. For a couple, the 3-hour ride works out at ₹1,500 each. For a group of four, ₹750 each.

Which duration to choose
- Short on time, or with small children: 2 hours. You still reach the narrow canals of Kuppapuram.
- First shikara ride, late afternoon: 3 hours. It adds Vembanad Lake at sunset, which the 2-hour ride does not reach.
- Early risers and food lovers: 4 hours. It goes deepest into Kuttanad, reaches the C Block paddy fields and stops at a toddy shop.
Every duration costs the same per hour, ₹1,000, so choose by route, not by price.
Why a shikara, not a houseboat
A shikara is narrow enough to enter canals about five feet wide, where houseboats cannot go. For a few hours on the water it sees more village life per hour than any other boat. For a full day or a night, a houseboat is the better choice; see shikara or houseboat.
