Alleppey Houseboat Route, Stop by Stop
Our Alleppey houseboat route is a loop: out from Punnamada across Vembanad Lake, through the paddy fields and island canals in the afternoon, a night moored near a village, and back through a different set of canals in the morning. This page goes through it stop by stop, with what you see at each point.
The day cruise follows the first half of the same route and returns by 5:00 PM.

Back at the jetty by 9:00 AM
12:00 PM — Punnamada
You board at the jetty at Punnamada Finishing Point, where the Nehru Trophy snake boat race ends. A welcome drink is served and the boat sets off across Punnamada Lake. Lunch is usually served on this first stretch.
Afternoon — Vembanad Lake
Punnamada opens into Vembanad Lake, the largest lake in Kerala. This is the widest water on the route: open sky, fishing canoes and the far shore in the distance. Kumarakom lies on the eastern shore; our Kumarakom round trip crosses to it for an extra fee.
Mid-afternoon — R Block and C Block
Paddy fields reclaimed from the lake, where rice is grown below sea level. From the deck you look down over the embankment at the fields — a sight few places in the world offer.
Late afternoon — Rani, Chithira and Marthandam
The route narrows into canals between island villages and coconut groves. Evening tea is served as you pass houses, churches and small boats along the banks.
Evening — Kainakari to Kuppapuram
The boat heads towards Kainakari and moors for the night near Kuppapuram village. Houseboats are not allowed to cruise after dark, so the boat stays here until morning. Dinner is served on board.
Morning — Kuppapuram to Meenapally Kayal
Breakfast on board as the boat sets off again. The early canals are the quietest part of the whole trip, with village life just starting.
9:00 AM — Pallathuruthy to Alleppey
The last stretch passes Pallathuruthy and returns to the jetty by 9:00 AM, leaving the rest of your day free.
The day cruise version
On a day cruise you board at 11:00 AM and follow the same stops from Punnamada to Rani, Chithira and Marthandam. Instead of mooring near Kuppapuram, the boat turns back via Kainakari and reaches the jetty by 5:00 PM. You miss the evening mooring and the morning canals through Meenapally Kayal.
Changing the route
The standard route is the same for every boat. Special routes, such as the Kumarakom round trip, are available for an extra fee. Ask when you book so we can plan them around the no-night-cruising rule.
What the route does not include
Houseboats are too wide for the narrowest village canals, some only about five feet across. To see those, take a shikara ride from the same jetty.

Book an overnight stay for the full route or a day cruise for the afternoon half. A 25% advance holds the boat.
