Alleppey Houseboat Timings: Check-in and Check-out
Houseboat timing in Alleppey follows the daylight. Boats cruise by day and moor at night, because night cruising is not allowed on the backwaters. That one rule explains why check-in is at midday and why overnight boats come back early in the morning.

Overnight stay: 12:00 PM to 9:00 AM
You board at noon and have lunch as the boat crosses Punnamada and Vembanad Lake. The afternoon is spent cruising past the paddy fields and island canals, with evening tea along the way. In the evening the boat moors near Kuppapuram village for the night and dinner is served. Breakfast is on the morning cruise back, and you reach the jetty at 9:00 AM. That is 21 hours on board.
Day cruise: 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM
Board an hour earlier than the overnight guests and cover the same afternoon route, then return to the jetty by 5:00 PM. That gives you six hours cruising and an evening back ashore.
Night stay: 5:30 PM to 9:00 AM
For guests who arrive late. The boat is already moored on the lake when you board at 5:30 PM. Dinner is at 8:00 PM, breakfast at 8:00 AM, and you leave at 9:00 AM. The boat does not cruise.
Why no cruising at night
For safety, and because local fishermen set their nets at night, houseboats in Alleppey must stop cruising after dark. Every overnight boat moors for the night and sets off again in the morning. It is why the morning leg of an overnight stay starts early.
AC hours
On Deluxe boats the bedroom AC runs from about 9:00 PM to 6:00 AM. Premium boats let you switch it on whenever you like, from boarding to departure. If you want AC in the afternoon on a Deluxe boat, the full-time AC upgrade is ₹1,500 per bedroom per night.
Shikara timings
Shikara rides run at the time you book. The 3-hour ride is best from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM for the sunset over Vembanad Lake. The 4-hour ride is best at 6:00 AM for sunrise or 11:30 AM for a lunch stop. See the shikara ride price page.
Planning around the timings
- Coming by train or road the same day? Aim to reach the jetty at Punnamada by noon.
- Landing in the afternoon? Book the night stay instead.
- Moving on the next day? You are back at 9:00 AM, which leaves the whole day for travel.
